Sebastián Leyton Chilean, b. 1961

Overview

His work strongly advocates for painting as a field of investigation, from which he develops a critical language, in an expression that evolves from painting to the object.

Sebastián Leyton is a visual artist with a Bachelor's degree in Art with a specialization in painting from the University of Chile, and he also studied Architecture at the Catholic University of Valparaíso.

He belongs to the generation of the 80s and worked for over 10 years in the Cabezas + Truffa + Leyton Collective, a group that was actively involved in the Chilean Visual Arts scene as part of a generation of artists who developed their education and careers during the period of military dictatorship (1973 - 1989). They were responsible for a series of exhibitions that marked a milestone during the 1980s. In 1989, the three members migrated to Europe, with Cabezas and Truffa settling in Madrid and Leyton in Paris. During this period, they continued to work remotely, culminating in 1996 with the celebration of their 10 years of collaborative work in the exhibition 'Natural History' at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Santiago, Chile. Their group's journey concluded in 1998 when they won the VI International Painting Biennial of Cuenca, Ecuador.

Sebastián has exhibited in various venues including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul, Korea), Staatlichen Kunsthalle (Berlin, Germany), Künstler Bethanien Keuzberg (Berlin, Germany), Maison de L'Amerique Latine (Paris, France), Museum of Modern Art (Cuenca, Ecuador), Nahím Isaías Museum (Guayaquil, Ecuador), The Artist Museum (Washington, USA), Organization of American States (Washington, USA), Museum of Visual Arts (Santiago, Chile), Museum of Contemporary Art (Santiago, Chile), National Museum of Fine Arts (Santiago, Chile), Espacio O Gallery (Santiago, Chile), AFA Gallery (Santiago, Chile), Animal Gallery (Santiago, Chile), among others.

Between 1989 and 1998, Leyton resided in Paris, Amsterdam, and New York. He currently lives and works in Santiago, Chile.

Works
Statement

My work is centered on visual research, strongly advocating for painting as a realm of investigation. It serves as a platform from which I develop a critical language, evolving from the image to the object.

It also represents a transition of diverse creative processes, born from experiences of both historical and personal contexts, shaping my thematic content. The resulting image allows for an associative reading of the concepts contained within each of the elements that compose and generate the work. In my case, these concepts may not always be immediately apparent, as I am interested in working with the invisibility hidden behind the visible. I aim to reveal 'reality' in its condition of imaginary construction, highlighting the persistent relationship between art and illusion.
